Assemblyman Jim Conte and Helping Hands Rescue Mission working together for this year’s backpack drive
Assemblyman Jim Conte (R,C,I,WF–Huntington Station) is asking the community to donate necessary supplies for students in need. Each year, the Helping Hands Rescue Mission seeks donations providing boys and girls, from Kindergarten through Grade 12, with necessary items such as backpacks, school supplies, hygiene items and socks.
“It’s important that we lend a helping hand to underprivileged students,” said Conte. “The Helping Hands Rescue Mission and my office will be working together to provide back-to-school items for students in need. If the community can help and supply students with the necessary items, we can ensure that students will not go empty handed on the first day of school.”
The Helping Hands Rescue Mission is asking for school supplies; specifically, backpacks, binders, composition notebooks, scissors, pens and pencils. Any items that you can donate for the mission’s backpack drive will be greatly appreciated.
Anyone interested in participating can drop off items at Assemblyman Conte’s office located at 1783 New York Avenue in Huntington Station, or items can be left at the Helping Hands Rescue Mission located at 225 Broadway in Huntington Station. Any questions, please call the Assemblyman’s office at 631-271-8025.
Assemblyman Jim Conte (R,C,I,WF-Huntington Station) recently attended the 2nd annual Andrew J. Nill Memorial Softball Tournament to help promote organ and tissue donations throughout the state and to present a New York State Organ Donor Medal of Honor to Eddie Nill, brother of Andrew Nill. The Organ Donor Medal of Honor is presented to every New York family that consents to donate their loved ones organs, tissues, eyes or bone marrow.
“The Nill family gave the gift of life when they made the decision to donate Andrew’s organs,” said Conte. “With this selfless gift Andrew and his family saved the lives of five strangers.”
In celebrating Andrew’s legacy his twin brother Eddie Nill established a memorial softball tournament which started in 2010 to create an annual and growing family reunion, not only for the friends and family of Andrew Nill but also for the extended family of donors and recipients here on Long Island.
Assemblyman Conte noted that proceeds from the event will go toward promoting organ and tissue donations throughout the state by enhancing the New York Organ Donor Network’s educational programs.
“The state’s growing demand for organ and tissue transplants is a real and urgent problem,” said Conte. “More needs to be done to help increase organ and tissue donor awareness.”
For more information on organ and tissue donations and to register as a donor, Assemblyman Conte urges residents to visit www.DonateLifeNY.org
Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) is encouraging students and families to participate in the annual Summer Reading Challenge with the New York State Library’s “Summer Reading at New York Libraries” initiative.
“Summer is the perfect opportunity for students and families to appreciate the joy of reading,” said Raia. “ Reading during the summer months will help students improve their academics for the upcoming school year. Evidence has shown that students suffer significant drops in academic performance when they don’t spend part of their summer vacation reading or pursuing other forms of educational enrichment. I hope children use their summer as an opportunity to read for enjoyment while keeping their minds fresh, which will ultimately help them when they head back to school in September.”
For more information, students and parents can visit www.summerreadingnys.org, call Assemblyman Raia’s office at 631-261-4151, or contact their local library:
